hi from daviwu
hi everyone -
I promise I'll keep up with you guys more. Here's some updates of myself :) My job is okay, a little boring at times. I'm in the Asset Management division of ML, supporting mutual fund portfolio managers. (They easily make 100K a year).
I started with a reporting project using Crystal Report and perl. A common task in the business is that we need to compare data from different databases or from different business feeds - so we parse them with perl and write stored procedure to display in the report. It's pretty interesting to learn at first, but once you've done it once it's the same for everything. This is the nature of IT - once you've learned something, it'll be the same thing over and over again.
I also started in a firmwide M$ XP upgrate project - we had to test many business applications and see if they work with XP. M$ will no longer be supporting NT starting 2005. I get to meet many business users, yet it was a little frustrating because there are a lot of people involved - the more people the more complicated the project becomes. I often find myself writing nasty emails covering our tracks (that we've done all that we can) and saying that the other IT groups hasn't done their job. Otherwise people just take your requests and forget about it.
Althought my job is mostly busy work, most new hires start with busy work anyway. And the good thing about my job is my hours - I live 10 minutes from work, and I work from 9-5.
I don't think it's my thing to really climb up the ladder in my division though - because it's got the large corporation politics.
In my free time, I'm studying for the LSAT, and I plan to take it in June. If I can ace it and get 180 in June I'll treat you guys to whichever exotic resturant you'd like :)
Later,
daviwu
