At the nadir and trickest moment of DPP history during the "China Fever 中國熱", president Chen conducted a TV interview and established the pro-green interstraight policy that was initially overlooked by most analysts.
Chen emphasized that the paramount distinction between Taiwan and China is Freedom - freedom of choice of your government, freedom of press and freedom of religion to name a few. This distinction cannot be compromised and overlooked while pursuing "堅持和平". While GMD party leader Lian resort to the ideal of "和平雙贏", Chen questions the feasiblilty of "雙贏" and proclaims that the bottom line for Taiwanese people is "自由".
This was by far the most significant statement that Chen has made in his 5-year presidency, however it was grossly overlooked by the media and the general public. Both the media and Chen himself are to blame.
The media is to blame because it is the culture of Taiwanese media to make a big deal of every sentence everyone says. It forces public figures to respond to all related, albeit insignificant, comments. When each comments occupy the same air time on TV, the general public cannot distinguish which ones are more important that others.
On the other hand, Chen himself is to blame because in additiontion to stating his ideal during his TV interview, he made too many criticisms in response to previous statements against him. Again, the length of the criticisms were much longer than his ideals, and even while stating his ideals he conveyed them in a critical way. This is why people reckon Chen's TV interview as more negative than positive.
(Next time - the tug war between president Chen and ex-president Lee ^_^)
